A Health Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest private high school in the county. Although she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already established a reputation as a teacher with educational methods that inspired and encouraged the pupils in her class to think and to learn.

For instance, one Monday morning at 9:30 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and articulated the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a general perspective and we are also going to learn about a number of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will unquestionably reveal that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the greater the probability that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then told the class members that each pupil would be responsible for investigating four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the class via a five minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top five alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After roughly twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she reviews the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told her pupils to go over the data on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 10 or 20 seconds, almost every student in the class raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the students had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism authorities. For example, just about every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, namely, "Do you feel extremely sick when you refrain from drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told her pupils why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcohol addiction. She pointed out that the key difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.

Fundamentally this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent all of a sudden quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is alcohol dependent, the pupils started to grasp the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and stimulated the students in her class to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
