A Ninth Grade Student Drinks Excessively With His Buddies, Experiences An Alcohol Overdose, And Finds Out That Listening In Class Can Change Your Life

Andy was a high school freshman who typically seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a daring personality and regularly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The basic glitch with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were consequently able from a legal standpoint to operate a car and to drink alcohol.

Andy, nevertheless, had a hard time grasping the fact that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, on the other hand, Andy normally drank with his high school buddies after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older buddies. One of his friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After buying some wine coolers, wine, and beer, Andy and his friends went to a public recreational area and drank for something like three hours.

After drinking approximately seven alcoholic beverages, Andy started to feel woozy and then threw up. When he lost consciousness on the football field, one of his drinking friends called 911 for immediate assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his friends went to the hospital to see Andy, they learned that Andy had been showing evidence of alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was frankly taken aback to discover that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had about five or ten drinks. When he told this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, conversely, the healthcare practitioner told Andy that drinking five or ten wine coolers over a two or three hour time frame could in fact be substantially more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The doctor further verbalized how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this transpires, an individual can cease to exist.

This was the first signal to Andy that he was drinking in an unsafe way and that there are costs for such actions. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a lucky individual because he almost perished from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The doctor also conversed with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol therapy for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was out of harm's way and told the healthcare professional that they would get Andy alcohol treatment.

While talking to his parents, Andy informed them that there must be a solid reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also informed his parents that the most ironic part about the entire drinking event was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the last six week grading period in health class at school.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was teaching didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Since he almost passed away, conversely, he felt that he should have listened more carefully in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his daily living.

Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to school and express regret to Mr. Johnson for not paying better attention to a topic that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
